Take a Deep Dive

Mission: “To save the planet, one pack at a time, by replacing harmful expanded polystyrene with sustainable alternatives that fit into the circular economy.”

Solution: To combat the waste caused by expanded polystyrene (EPS), Planet Protector Packaging manufactures and distributes Woolpack, a sustainable and environmentally responsible insulated packaging technology. Made in Australia and New Zealand, from sheep waste wool, Woolpack technology is a direct replacement for EPS in the transportation of temperature-sensitive food and pharmaceuticals.  EPS is non-biodegradable and made from non-renewable fossil fuels. It takes more than 500 years to decompose and often ends up in waterways, threatening marine life. Planet Protector Packaging has founded a solution to replace this material with Woolpack. They aim to be the market leader in thermal packaging that doesn’t harm the planet. Woolpack comes in a variety of sector-specific cartons and pouches such as Seafood Protector, Pharma Protector and Wine Protector.

How does the ocean inspire you? “I love to listen to the silence… the oceans have so much to say! They are everything at once, calm, turbulent, vast and deep. The oceans are graceful and strong, expansive and they are home to the greatest diversity of life on Earth. They are a reminder that humans are small and we need to live in harmony with nature, with the oceans, with plant and animal life. Life is like the ocean; it goes up and down. Nothing speaks more about strength and vulnerabilities. They are a metaphor for weathering the tough times and life’s challenges knowing that calmer seas are on the horizon to replace the storm. I crave the smell of the warm sea-breeze; to feel the sunshine, to heart the soothing sounds as they kiss the shore. It is a reminder that life is good. The ocean fixes everything. Humans rely on the oceans and yet over the decades our “throw away” society has dumped so much “stuff into the oceans”, we are in a crisis. Plant Protector was established in response to this waste crisis and the impact on the ocean habitat. Polystyrene is one of the worst types of plastic; we are on a mission to eliminate polystyrene and to be the market leader in sustainable thermal packaging that does not harm the planet. The oceans support life. There is irrefutable evidence and research over many decades that compels us to act now. The environment is reeling, the plastics in the ocean movement has now crossed the tipping point. We need to act now to be better stewards of our environment and to protect the oceans and the variety of species and communities that depend on them.” - Joanne Howarth, CEO.
