EPISODE 42 - PAUL DE GELDER. IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. This is a mantra that had been drilled into Paul De Gelder since the earliest days of his military training in the Australian Army. It’s a mantra that Paul has embodied throughout his unique life but in particular, since a Bull Shark tore through his flesh, resulting in the loss of his right forearm and right leg during a routine Navy drill in Sydney Harbour in 2009.
Since that fateful incident that almost took the Navy clearance diver’s life, Paul has been on a wild ride that has seen him become a highly accomplished public speaker, TV host, actor, author and leading voice for the conservation of the species that so nearly ended his stint on Planet Ocean: sharks.
In this podcast, recorded whilst Paul was in Australia filming for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, we take a journey that reveals the extent to which the very existence of sharks is threatened and the critical role they perform in the ocean. It’s a captivating journey that will have you on the edge of your seat and marvelling at the grit and determination of this one man who has overcome so much to give back to the very species that nearly took his life.
We want to take this moment to thank Paul for everything he has done to protect Planet Ocean’s sharks and to extend that gratitude to all the wonderful people the world over who are driven to ensure that healthy populations of sharks exist for many more years to come.
