EPISODE 48 - EMILY JATEFF ON TRUSTING IN SCIENCE FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Emily Jateff is the Curator of Ocean Science and Technology at the Australian National Maritime Museum (Sea Museum) and a distinguished maritime archaeologist. Emily is a passionate science communicator on a mission to ensure the ocean is understood and appreciated for its vital role in shaping a better future.

In this podcast episode we learn all about Emily’s unique career that has seen her travel to far corners of the globe and to the depths of the ocean - exploring historical artefacts that provide a glimpse into where we have come from, where we are going and how to navigate challenges that may come our way. Notably, Emily was part of the team with James Cameron to explore the wreck of the Titanic in a MIR submersible - it’s not everyday you talk with someone who has explored the Titanic!

Emily is performing a valuable role in Australia’s ongoing efforts to be a leader in ocean science and technology and helping the Australian National Maritime Museum to continue in it’s long tradition of documenting, researching, collecting and exhibiting Australia’s maritime history. The next big exhibition Emily is working on will be the ‘One Ocean Our Future’ exhibition that is not to be missed.

In this episode we also reference Emily’s 2020 TEDx talk ‘The Tortoise Approach to Solving Climate Change’ that reinforces the critical importance of following the scientific approach to solving problems - even if it takes longer.
