BUILDING RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE MOTIVATION TO HELP PLANET OCEAN

What can we learn from bold ocean adventurers and athletes to help us navigate our own everyday struggles and achieve our goals? How can those of us with a burning passion to ‘do more’ to help Planet Ocean or devote our careers to making a positive impact learn from those that have stared down and resolved their own fears and anxieties?

Building resilience and finding your own form of sustainable motivation are important themes to explore for startups, entrepreneurs, and all of us passionate about making a positive impact on the world. Without the skills and attitude to take on challenging situations and persevere through adversity many leaders and champions in business, community, politics and sports would never have achieved their goals.

In this week’s episode of The Ocean Impact Podcast we were fortunate enough to speak to big wave professional surfer and acclaimed corporate keynote speaker Mark Mathews.

For anyone who has seen photos and videos of Mark surfing some of Planet Ocean’s biggest and most intimidating water mountains, you’d be forgiven for thinking of him as some sort of daredevil with no regard for his life. But in this conversation we learn it is to the contrary. Mark is terrified of surfing giant waves and standing in front of a packed room of corporate leaders. It was in an attempt to understand the source of his own fears and anxieties (and how to manage them) that Mark unlocked a wealth of knowledge and resources that he now shares with businesses like Google, Commonwealth Bank and Mastercard.

In this episode, Tim finds out about how Mark has managed to take his greatest fears and turn them into his passion.

“You've gotta be honest with yourself about what is really important to you. And if you can figure that out, and you can match that with a career or with what you want to do, then all of a sudden the motivation grows, and then things that looked before to be more scary, they're more exciting - because you know what's important to you and if something lies on the other side of that fear you are much more likely to choose for yourself to take that fear on.”

We encourage you to settle into a comfortable seat with a notepad, tune into our latest podcast and listen closely to what Mark has to say. You will learn some valuable insights and position yourself to do some extra ‘work’ on yourself for the betterment of your life, career, relationships and, Planet Ocean
